Our History in Coventry

Our firm can trace its roots back to the same year that the first top hat was worn. It was in 1797 that Twist & Son first opened its doors to the people of Coventry – and in one form or another our firm has been offering legal services ever since.

That’s a heritage to be proud of in our book. We are solicitors with deep roots in the local and regional communities which enhance our services through knowledge and networks that few other firms can boast.

But we’re also a forward-thinking firm that focuses on the future. We take forward the founding principles of Twist & Son by continuing to forge firm relationships with our clients that in many cases last decades – and we never rest on our laurels.

Our Heritage

The original practice was in being in 1797, the firm subsequently became ‘Woodcock, Twist & Sons’ circa 1820 and continued until circa 1860 when Woodcock left. 'Twist & Sons' continued. From 1778 to circa 1985, the original Mr Twist (and then his son) acted as clerks to the vestry of Holy Trinity Church and from 1843 to 1896 two generations of Twists acted as clerk to The Magistrate.

The firm practiced in Hertford Street, Coventry. The premises were bought by The Coventry Evening Telegraph in the 1930’s. Mr Twist lived at number 3, The Quadrant, Coventry for over 150 years, until he moved out in the 1930’s and Twist & Son’s moved in.

In the 1960’s Twist & Son’s acquired an old established practice of H.Cowley on Mr Cowleys death and adopted the name of ‘Cowley, Twist & Co.’

In 1970/71 Cowley, Twist & Co. amalgamated with the practice of Goate, Bullock & Norris, Mr Brindley worked at this firm and they adopted the name 'Brindley Twist Co'. In 1973 Brindley Twist Co. merged with 'Tafft & James' (est. 1959) which amalgamated practice became ‘Brindley Twist Tafft & James.’ (BTTJ).

The practice continued to occupy number 3 The Quadrant until 1995 and in 1991 acquired the practice of Haxby Jarvis & Malcolm Brown in Coventry.

Lowick Gate, Siskin Drive became our practice premises and still remains our home and head office to this day. In October 2021, BTTJ acquired local firm MacNamara King expanding our office locations to Warwick, Balsall Common and Southam.
